You know that saying, "Variety is the spice of life"? It couldn’t be more true, especially as we age. At 42, I feel like I’m standing on the doorstep of perimenopause (though I’m not eager for the door to swing wide open just yet). Like many of my clients, I’ve been doing a lot of reading, listening, and research to prepare for this phase of life. Recently, I listened to a podcast with Dr. Mindy Pelz and Dr. Carrie Jones, two brilliant women dedicated to helping women navigate hormonal shifts. Their conversation sparked a reminder I think we all need: variety is essential to our well-being as we age.
As we grow older, it’s easy to become creatures of habit, sticking to routines that feel comfortable and safe. I’m guilty of it myself. While feeling more tired or anxious, or fearing failure or discomfort can hold us back, embracing variety in all aspects of life is critical, especially as we enter new stages of health and life.
Why Variety Matters
Variety is a powerful tool to help us stay vibrant, strong, and resilient as we age. Here’s how adding a little variety can transform different areas of our lives:
Food: Our gut microbiome thrives on variety. Aim to include 20-30 different plant foods each week. This not only boosts digestion but also benefits brain function, hormone regulation, circulation, and overall vitality. This includes a variety of fruits, veggies (eat seasonally to help you switch it up!), nuts, seeds and legumes.
Exercise: Mix up your fitness routine. Try a new class, lift heavier weights, or add a weighted vest during your walks. Variety challenges your muscles and mind, keeping your body strong and adaptable.
Travel: Explore new places or travel with different companions. Choose destinations that challenge you physically and mentally, keeping your curiosity and adventurous spirit alive.
Social Connections: Step outside your usual circle of friends. Invite an acquaintance or someone you haven’t connected with in a while for coffee, a dog walk, or a yoga class. These new connections can bring fresh perspectives and energy into your life.
Brain Stimulation: Learn something new, whether it’s a hobby or a skill. Podcasts, audiobooks, and workshops are great tools to keep your brain sharp and engaged.
Inspiring Examples of Variety
I can’t help but think of my mother-in-law when I reflect on the benefits of variety. At 68, she and my father-in-law recently planned a trip to Scotland, hiking challenging trails and embracing new experiences with a group of old and new friends. Despite a recent injury, she didn’t let discomfort hold her back. They remain active, strong, and connected, whether it’s skiing with their grandkids or staying fit in Florida by swimming, cycling, lifting weights, and trying new healthy ingredients. Their example reminds me that aging doesn’t have to slow us down. With variety, we can continue to thrive.
My Personal Approach to Variety
Incorporating variety into my own life has been an exciting and energizing process:
I’ve started a personal training course to help others build strength.
I applied for a yoga instructor position at a new gym.
I’m learning French to support my kids with their homework.
I listen to inspiring podcasts during my daily walks.
I’ve committed to saying "yes" more often to social events, even when the couch feels tempting!
I’m focusing on my sleep, aiming for 7-8 hours of quality rest each night.
I’ve revamped my workout and nutrition routine to overcome plateaus, adding more protein and experimenting with different forms of exercise.
Aging with grace doesn’t mean standing still. It means embracing change and seeking variety in every aspect of life. #WorldMenopauseMonth
